Traditional wisdom would suggest that we make out a will or create a trust and all of our personal and family matters will be tended to exactly the way we prescribe. “Not so” says author Benjamin Berkley. Through his nearly thirty year career as a probate and estate

planning attorney, Ben has just about seen it all. In his new book My Wishes, Ben shares with his readers the wisdom that only he can.

My Wishes was written to explore all of the issues one faces at the end of life, both personal and legal. Berkley provides solutions to the questions all of us think about but do not discuss. The author goes into great detail of estate planning, healthcare, insurance, and many other important issues. My Wishes provides very helpful outlines, worksheets, resources, important addresses and phone numbers that as sure to help the reader get organized.

But the real treasure to be found in My Wishes is the author’s innovative approach. After nearly thirty years of interacting with people as a probate and estate planning attorney, the author has penned a book that resonates with its readers. Berkley takes what my be considered a daunting task and turns it into an uplifting and loving experience. Ben’s zest for life permeates every page. It’s that spirit that encourages every reader to ask themselves one very simple, yet often ignored question: “what would really make me happy?”

The author focuses much of the attention of My Wishes to the entire families’ emotional state at one’s passing. To some, Berkley’s recommendations may seem outside of the norm, even self-indulgent. Advice on planning your own funeral, selecting your own pallbearers, and writing your own eulogy is not what everyone would expect from a book in this genre. Yet the author’s experience has born out that his approach minimizes the stress on the surviving family members and keeps the squabbling to a minimum.

The author also stresses that with the uncertainties we all face, that day will be here sooner than most plan on. He suggests not waiting to do the things that give you a deep heart felt joy. Through witty anecdotes of his own experiences and those of his clients interspersed in his book – Berkley points out the importance of spending your time and money in a way that gives you happiness while you’re still on this earth. He recommends that his readers live their life to its fullest.
